Emily’s career as a practice manager shows her dedication and love for the veterinary profession. She puts her heart into it when she talks about important issues such as team building and burnout: Issues that often we ignore in favour of more pressing clinical duties. But as she puts it, ‘I make it a priority. You’re nothing without the team’.

In this episode, Emily talks about how she has worked as a practice manager of a 40 staff facility before becoming a regional director of a veterinary group that spams five sites across the US. She talks about team building, how to deal with toxic behaviours and environments, staff burnout and her dream of helping foreign veterinary doctors integrate into the US.

Nina is a British veterinary surgeon with Ukrainian roots. Her grandparents were victims of WWII as forced labour and eventually made it to the UK. However, most of her extended family remains in Ukraine. The Russian invasion has caused her grave concern, and given her ties to her ancestral homeland, she felt a drive to help in some way.

As a veterinarian, she has used her medical knowledge and her Ukrainian connections in London to try and help the Ukrainian frontline. In this episode, she tells us how.

Maurice works in disease surveillance in Trinidad and Tobago and he’s very aware of the socioeconomic factors that lead to animal poaching from Venezuela. In the first part of this episode, he talks about his concerns about these animals’ welfare.

Merran is a veterinary pharmacologist who works in Australia. Merran talks about how her parents moved from the UK to Australia, and how her journey took her from being a veterinary surgeon to becoming a professor of Veterinary pharmacology at the University of Sydney.

Merran talks about how she teaches veterinary students and about her research into the use of different drugs in koalas and how the koala metabolism differs from other animals.

I asked Merran about the newly developed treatment to treat Feline Infectious Peritonitis in the cat and about coronavirus in both people and animals.
